In response to community consultation requesting more music and physical education teaching at Parua Bay School, four specialist teachers visit the school every Thursday to provide opportunities for all our tamariki in music, S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Te Reo Maori and P.E. / Drama.
Matua Caleb is a well known teacher to our students at Parua Bay School, and he delivers a high energy and diverse range of opportunities in Physical Education and Drama. His imposing frame (well over 6 foot), booming voice and lively demeanour are all key traits that enable Caleb to empower his tamariki to take risks and enjoy their learning in his classes.
Tineke Martin is another friendly face to join our C.R.T. team of specialist teachers in 2019. She has taught our intermediate children in the past and is therefore well known in our community. Tineke is a science specialist and has enjoyed bringing S.T.E.A.M. challenges and opportunities to our children.
George Karklins has joined the C.R.T. team teaching music to the children across the school. He has a very energetic and impassioned approach to teaching music and the children have really enjoyed this. George teaches musical theory, singing, musical instruments, rhythm and dance, and can often be heard singing funny ditties to the kids.
Whaea Pera has also joined our team, teaching Te Reo and Tikanga Maori to our children. Her in depth knowledge, experience and charming manner have meant that Whaea Pera has been an instant success at Parua Bay School. Pera works closely alongside our teachers ensuring she is adding value to the te Reo Maori already being taught in the classrooms.
An additional advantage of having our four specialist teachers in on Thursdays is that our collaborative teams of teachers are able to be released at the same time, and so therefore can meet, plan or evaluate during the school day on a weekly basis.
